If you've used Drum Racks at all, then you know that dropping a sample on to a drum pad causes a Simpler to be created. However, you may have also noticed that the Simpler that gets created does not use the default values saved using the Save As Default Preset command that we discussed yesterday.
To get a customized Simpler to appear when dropping samples into a Drum Rack, you'll need to use a little drag and drop. First, open Live's file browser and display the Live Library, open up the Defaults folder, and you'll find the folders Dropping Samples -> On Drum Rack, as seen below:
Once you've got the Simpler configured the way you like (again, 70% Velocity to Volume is recommended if you want velocity sensitivity for your drums), grab it by the title bar and drag it into the browser, dropping it in the On Drum Rack folder. Now, any sample dropped on to a drum pad will use the defaults you specify.
The nifty thing here is that you also have the option of making Sampler your default device for dropping samples. Just configure a Sampler the way you like it and drop it into the On Drum Rack folder instead and your sample based Drum Racks will use Sampler instead.
