SHUFFLE THAT BUFFER

My favorite audio effect that comes with Max For Live has to be the Buffer Shuffler. Here's a few fun facts to get you started...

Basically, this device takes the incoming audio, chops it into slices and then allows those slices to be played back in any order. Start off by playing a drum loop through it (you can use any loop, but a basic drum loop will make it very clear what the Buffer Shuffler is doing).

Turn on the Duplicate switch:

You won't hear anything special yet. All this does is link the left and right channels - this controls the chaos you'll be generating and makes it a bit easier to learn the effect.

Now, hit either the left channel or right channel Randomize button at the top - it doesn't matter which since the channels are linked.

Voila! Instant cut-up madness. Don't like what you hear? Hit Randomize until you do.

The grids will look something like this:

Each orange rectangle represents a slice of the loop. In the example above, take a look at the first column (highlighted red). This represents the first 1/16th note of the bar. Notice that the third rectangle up is highlighted orange. This means that on the first 1/16th note of the bar, the third 1/16th note slice of the loop will be played.

Feel free to edit the grid by clicking in the slots.

For maximum chaos, turn on Auto-Dice:

Now, a new random slice order will be selected every bar.
