Hobotech

A hobo is not a bum: think transient or vagabond.

Hobotech is the creation of Producer/DJ Jon Margulies. Since it's fireside conception in 2007, Hobotech has steadily grown in popularity. Since the original NYC events that featured a collective of talent including ATOM, FreeBassBK and Hobotrail, Jon's recent schedule has included an appearance at Coachella, an opening set for Bassnectar with collaborator Haj (Sub Swara), and shows which have found him sharing the stage with luminaries of bass music including ill.Gates, David Starfire and AN-TEN-NAE.

Jon's latest EP, "This Is The Place" was described as "like George Clinton meets Datsik" on BassGeneration.com, and was included as one of eight featured downloads in the 2010 wrapup newsletter from TheUntz.com, alongside releases by Kraddy, MartyParty and Sub Swara.

The hour long mixes are available at soundcloud.

The EPs are available for download at bandcamp.

JON MARGULIES

IMG_0797 Jon Margulies is Hobotech's founder. His sets are known for taking dancers on a journey through a strange American expanse where bouncy tech beats ride the rails with songs by Woody Guthrie, John Lee Hooker and Tom Waits. For more info, check out Jon's full bio or listen to some music

The RISING SMOKE of the HOBO KINGS

HoboKings

The Rising Smoke of the Hobo Kings is a collaboration between Haj (Sub Swara / Nyxxys) and Jon Margulies. Expect boxcar funk, deisel dub and badass bluegrass crunk. Their  remix of Sub Swara's Belgrade Riddim is available on the new Hobotech EP.

ATOM

RedmixerATOM, a.k.a. Matt Inconiglios, has been experimenting with sound since he re-wired his AM radio to play through an old guitar amplifier as a child. Excited by the possibilities of sound manipulation through electronics, ATOM now mixes music, sounds, dialogue, and whatever else he can find to create a surreal sonic painting.

HOBOTRAIL

IMG_0434

Hobotrail is Todd Polenberg (Image Node) rocking beats and Thom Bailey (http://www.thomasbaileymusic.com/) rocking live fiddle, mandolin, and guitar.  We play old-timey standards with new-school minimal/techno groove, we don't drink, we don't smoke, and we don't wear no greasy coat.

FREEBASS BK

FB_hobo1 A roving 3 year collaboration between record collector-thrift maven-live technology champion DJ Shakey, and gypsy-old time-hobo multi-instrumentalist and clown musician Aaroneous, FreeBass have performed their genre bending music at festivals, parties, and clubs all over the country. Drawing on their combined enthusiasm for antique American roots music and modern technology, Shakey and Aaroneous mine the rich soil of the hobo lexicon and add some spit and polish, while keeping the spirit and message very much intact.

MUSHRIGGER

IMG_0421 In the old days umbrellas were built to last! Not to say they didn't break on occasion but in them days who threw things away? In them days you'd wait for the mush rigger to come to town. He'd take that old umbrella, restitch it, rework it, carve a new hook and that old umbrella would be slick as new! Better even! A good mush rigger fixed up just about anything he could find and it ain't no different today.
